Are We THAT Thick?

After reading the Brunei Times’ piece on ‘Mobile Phones as a symbol of social standing’, the first thought that came to my mind was just how thick we Bruneians can be. In this holy month, I know I shouldn't be having any negative thought but I’m seriously frustrated! But I honestly lost my head when I read a 36-year old civil servant admitted that “his eyes are closed when he pays for a new phone”. O Dear! What is wrong with us?!

[Let me Breathe…]

I don’t know how these people can afford to constantly buy the latest phones. But I suspect credit, be it credit card or bank loan, is the main mode of payment.

Well, I came across an article in Slate that talked about the role of credits in our everyday lives. It was interesting the way it likened credit to a leverage i.e. power that allows you lift a heavy stuff. In this case, credits make everything appear so cheap. Or another way of seeing it, without credit, things look expensive.

Don’t get me wrong, I am not totally against credit cards or even personal loans. There are times, especially when we are travelling, credit cards will come in very handy. Or for when budget is tight and your freezer suddenly dies on you, then the personal loan that is being offered in the shops, can help save your life. But to use credits just to prove that you have a high salary or to have the latest mobile phone or camera that even can rival James Bond’s is beyond me! It’s even worse if you are buying a new phone at the expense of your child’s school fee.

In these last few days of Ramadhan, I can imagine the ‘eyes-turn-blind’ shopping frenzies are at their peaks in Brunei.

This can lead to a disaster, not only to the poor (or shall I call ‘thick’) person’s life but also to the health of the economy. In fact, I believe this is also another culprit that contributes to the increasing number of claims of being ‘poor’ in Brunei.

So I say, please…… whoever or whichever authority is looking into the credit policy in Brunei, to look into this seriously. It is high time we put a credit rating system in place. What I mean is that you can’t just allow any Tom, Dick and Harry that has a blue payslip enters into a credit contract without a thorough check on his financial background.

Everyday in the news, we hear about ‘credit crunch’ happening globally that has even put those giant corporations down on their knees and even collapse. It all started from careless and inappropriate lending. Anyway, it probably is still a foreign term in Brunei, so let’s keep it that way.

Selamat Menyambut Hari Raya Aidil Fitri. Spend Wisely!

Salaam.

I used to own a Nokia N90 and it was a cool gadget since I could surf the net thanks to B-Mobile when it first started 3G a few years ago. It was second hand and bought it out of my bonus pay. I then bought an N95 (made in China) but that lasted only less than a year - cheap things are not good and good things aren't cheap, right? Now I can still survive, communication-wise, on an old cheapskate Nokia2610 and EasiKad..

Early this month, I was tempted to buy my lovely daughter a new B$49 Nokia cellphone (really cheaply nowadays) on her 10th birthday. Her richer classmates all got more expensive handphones, by the way. But she much preferred a new Astro set. I decided not to buy her neither. My 14-year old son is still using a bulky old set. I can't afford to buy them both fancier mobiles yet. I'd rather buy them a good but cheap laptop to help them in their schoolwork but that'll have to wait until I can really afford it. The new Acer Atom Notebook is not a bad idea.

The thing is now I'd rather give my money away to my jobless relative who has six mouths to feed! A friend (basic pay of only BND300) with two wives and nine kids sometimes also need my support, financial or otherwise.

At the same time, almost all my monthly wages go to hire purchase repayments under my wife's name since she's a government civil servant while I'm only a servant.

At the end of the day, no take home pay to save for rainy days!

Without resorting to crunching credit 'crutches' (e.g. inevitable car loan), I'd certainly be immobile in Brunei since public buses are almost unreliable, very dear taxi rides, etc. So if no transport, no work, no pay, no credit. Life of poverty will then lead to worst evils. So average Bruneians live on borrowed lives, basically - chained for life by the big Credit, Loan or Hire Purchase of such necessities.

I just think some Bruneian's need to deal with settling for less, sometimes. Without sounding like a cliche, moderation is normally the right way.

Why buy an expensive car (a car being a financial liability in itself) when one can't really afford it? A mobile phone as well for that matter.

I believe at the end of the day, Bruneians need to pick up on more financial planning. Life's a marathon, not a race. I don't think any of us wants to lose control of our finance at 55++ & depend on their kids &/or social agencies. It's not a pretty sight.

Talking about cars, I believe the Land Transport Dept these last few weeks before Raya are swamped with file loads of new registrations to be sorted out. Car salesmen and car insurance agents and of course, banks' financing executives are busy bees since full loans i.e. no down payments or deposits necessary. Imagine within a year 30,000 new cars or more are driven on Brunei roads! KL, KM, KN, KP and now KR... Before end of October -- BAA maybe!

I am 26 years old- 1/3 breadwinner of a family of 15- and it took me a trip to a friend who just started as an insurance planner to start itemising my budget a few months back. It's very, very painful thing to do - sometimes I wish I can do the tutup mata and wake up with an extra savings left every month in the bank, but it just does not work that way. When I tutup mata, my mind eye's wide awake and I see the spreadsheet rows and columns and the figures inside. (Works so much better than a cold shower after seeing that 130 dollars promo for rebonding at AI Salon.)

Maybe that's what we all need. A simple exercise of listing down our spendings. Maybe we can get JPKE or whichever public authority to have an expert to have a "Minggu Kesedaran Pelanggan" with this little exercise. Credit Crunch, Credit Policy does not mean a thing to us thick Bruneians. Yes some people are enlightened and aware like you are Rogue Economists, but the rest of the people just need to be told and told again.
