Wish List

In light of the current Leg Co Session, below are my 'wish list' of topics that I hope the distinguished Yang Berhormats are debating:

1. Unemployment: This has been a main issue since 10 years ago which I feel has not been properly addressed with only some 'piecemeal' solutions thrown from different departments without any coordination. The demand as well as the supply sides of the issue have to be debated. The issues involving the unemployment include:
i)The conflict between local vs. foreign workers: which to a certain extent related to the attitude of local workers.
ii)The remuneration gap: And NO I don't want to hear the same proposal where the employer (the private sector) is asked to give higher wages. That, to me is NOT a solution. What can the government DO to reduce this gap?
iii)The attitude of local workers: A serious lack of commitment.
iv) The welfare and rights of workers: What more can I say?
v) The rights of employers: While employees can lodge their complaints to the Labour Department, where can employers go?
vi) The availability of jobs. Can the private sector provides 'enough' jobs?
vii) Working age: The merits/demerits of extending the pension age.
viii) Job trainings/ skills etc.

2. Social illnesses: Drugs, school-dropouts, teenage pregnancy etc. These are just at the top of my head.

3. Poverty: I cannot stress any further. His Majesty's vision of 0% poverty needs to be addressed properly. The issues related to poverty include:
i) Establishing a national poverty line - in order to measure the gap between the rich and the poor and just HOW poor are we?
ii)To go beyond the solution of providing just 'monetary assistance'.
iii) To combat social illnesses which are very much related with poverty.
iv) To review some fiscal measures i.e. tax and subsidy as the traditional means of redistributing income.

4. Last but certainly NOT the least, BRUNEI's Future:
i) After Oil....What?
ii) Oil Fund to provide for the future. If BIA is doing this, where DO we stand at the moment? How secure is our future? How long can the fund sustain Brunei in the event oil runs dry (This can happen, No?)
iii) Pension schemes: Is TAP enough? How can we eradicate poverty if there is not enough money to provide for the daily expenses, once out of work. What is the merit/demerit of re-introducing a (NOT SO LAVISH) pension scheme. What is the possibility for the 'employer' to increase its contribution. BUT bearing in mind the capability of the current 'weak' private sector. How can the government assist the local workers in the private sector in the provision of a secure future.
iv) What about some form of a National Insurance for every working Bruneian? What happens if accidents occur, death etc?

Oh the list goes on!
But then these are just a mommy's wish..and we'll see how the session goes.

Salaam.

I agree when you said after oil and then what? As we were travelling down to KB and watching things are as they are not so much big buildings up just show how much progress we are doing! It kinda makes me feel ever so sad imagining (although I shouldn't) if once this oil runs out what will become of shell people. Will KB become another flint like in the US? When an industry falls and a big one too... Can you imagine all the workers fleeing to bandar looking for jobs and where?

Job creation is key! and is the a solution for unemployment! Instead of govt trying to get SME's to do it why don't the govt employ Bruneians to be farmers.

If we can employ Bruneains to be garbage collectors, gardeners etc I am very sure we can employ Bruneians to be farmers.

I totally agree with His Majesty on agriculture. Seriously after many years can we actually say are we self sufficient. Chicken and eggs maybe?

What about our medicines, can't we build our own factory to make medicines and the medicical equipments like syringe and bottles ourselves? and then we in turn supply to the govt its a cycle within our own nations. Our money is kept within ourselves.

What about fruits and vegetables? Why can't we grow enought fruits and vegetables? Why must we buy from abroad? We always take the easy route..and sell but we don't make enough for our own.

What about basics like onions, garlics, chilli? We should cultivate our lands for all this for us when in times of need at least we have food to eat on our table.

We create employment also this way, we pay to our own people and then the money still goes back to us.

Why does it take so long to make a decision?

I don't know about you? Seriously some people lack decision making! It's not that difficult. If you're doing good for the country and know its good, consensus is good and all the necessary facts and figures are positive, send to legal all okay... Then it's a matter of yes or no!

One more thing to add maybe we should tighten our enforcement is many areas.

I have had people complain like in the newspaper more and more people asking for help in terms of monetary help and it gets younger. Guess what imagine if there is no more help what will become of us. If no more help cos of no more oil! We should do some sort of ultimatum or agreement that they have to swear by.

Upon receiving this money the agreement should state I swear to work my very best to get my life together with the help of such and such dept. I will agree to abide to their rules and terms and conditions otherwise such and such dept will not provide anymore provision.

Such depts should also set the rules and regulation. Say if you help this person, make an agreement for them to sign, we give you this much for you to start a business. If you manage to bring in your business this much money then we will continue to support until this time.

If this small business does not profit after a certain time, we will terminate any help and blacklist.

We have to give an ultimanum. We all must suffer to get our desires. If we don't feel the suffering how are we going to progress how are we going to move how are we going to achieve what we actually want to achieve.

I love refering back to history and as history does repeats itself. Our own prophet Nabi S.A.W suffered for the first 10 years of trying to teach the world of this true religion! But the 10 years after that was blossoming.. Look at us now 1000+ years later.. Look what Islam as a religion have become! We are the most growing religion in the whole world just because one man's suffering and his companion. Because of one man's belief There is only on God and that is Allah.

Why can't we follow the footsteps of Nabi to suffer but work hard, work fair and then enjoy the bounties of our lives later or in the hereafter.

I pray that Allah will guide us as a country to always be grateful and to teach us all what to do and guide us to be better, prosperous and gigih people. Amin

nice one, but the thing is.. melayu atu melayu tah sudah tu. The money is still there, government inda kasi chance lagi. so it's up to us individuals. we have a choice. so cara nya, give difficulties so people will start taking thier own shit. but if crime rates rises, then the issue has got to be from the school curiculum, education wise. brunei is still ok... we just need to exploit every opportunity. the indians n chinese wud have wake up so early n look for money. We malay, u tell me.
im malay in heart, but i dont absorb or share malays mentality and thinking. Just look at the cabinet minister rite now, 95% all of them are Overseas graduates. of course thier job is to say yes or no. they are in comfort zone. so we as a commoner, should stop moaning and exploit every opportuinty. always remind ourselves, WE ARE NOBODY, so who r going to give a damn what we think.

We have a choice, and the choice is yours, u mau hidup senang, kerja rajin, mau hidup serderhana, jangan lavish, lastly jangan mencuri lah. :)

National Insurance Contributions, or as in PAYE, can only work when there's Income Tax... and for compulsory deductions for those who r employed... and in the UK, those who r not employed are entitled to be paid some money by the state... "on the dole" i thinks heheh
